I couldn't help but notice that a line from the Frank Zappa album Joe's Garage appeared in the multiplayer map "The Pit" on Halo 3. A voice over the intercom states "The white zone is for loading and unloading, if you want to load or unload, go to the white zone".

Well done Bungie!

Before, I only noticed the announcer mention something about training.

Just saw Zappa Plays Zappa (Dweezil and co playing his father's music). It was an amazing 2.5 hours and well worth every penny. I assumed they'd never come to town. It was great to be in Row 3. =)

All that wait...

All the wait and no payoff. Naruto 104 still doesn't resolve the "Tea Country" meandering, which I hear coincides with contract negotiation week for Masashi-San. In any case, 105 seems to end this arc once and for all. FMA is over now. 51 is done and translated. Hard to believe the ending, perhaps the FMA Movie will go into more detail/go further in the timeline. For more details on that, go here.

Have fun.

Naruto news...

episode 104 will not air in Japan this week because of a one hour special of Prince of Tennis.
Episode 104 of the Naruto anime series will air on October 13th. With Episode 104 will come a new ending theme, the 7th in the series history. This one called "Mountain A Go Go Two" by Captain Stridum.

To cheer us up a bit, here's a link to a review for the new Naruto game for PS2

Dance Dance Revolution action with my bud Tom

Here's my cat Bruce

Emulation, Music & such

My roommate and I played some World Heroes and Samurai Showdown IV today on my Neo-Geo emulator. It all started with a little SVC Chaos action on my new Xbox demo disc from the xbox mag. I was beat down by one of the Bogards and made a slight comeback with Ryu. Man, it looks great on the 36" TV. I was pining over all the Neo-Geo cabinets on eBay and other sites and thinking about building my own, but perhaps I'll just get a "shotgun" system which has the genuine arcade (MVS) hardware in a small box, or perhaps get an AES (home system) and get the Phantom converter (which allows you to play most arcade MVS carts). One big hurdle to doing this task is the amount of time and or money it takes to materialize any of these ideas. A play-ready Neo cabinet is approx $400 and up, costing almost as much in shipping. The other routes cost just about as much if you want the S-Video kit, a Japanese home system, or a Phantom adapter (each cost around $300-$500. I gotta hand it to them (Neo-Geo fans). They are truly dedicated! I remember first discovering Samurai Showdown at the arcade and being plain mesmerized by the intense graphics and cool moves. Ukyo was the man, and I suppose that still holds true today with the new SamSho V being released recently. As most people know, the Neo-Geo is primarily a platform for straight-up Street Fighter style fighting games. There are a few puzzle games, and the occasional "shooter" (read Gradius clone), but most people are in it for the fighters.

Fighting games have attempted to sally forth into the world of 3D and has had very mixed results. For instance, Killer Instinct Gold only looked annoying with cool 3D backgrounds and 2D fighters. It just made it more obvious that you either have to be consistent, or be a genius at mixing the two. Rumor has it, that there's a Samurai Showdown 3D, but it was a crap game. This is only heresay, cause I've never seen it! The problem with that opinion is that it could just be an obnoxious purist who can never be satisfied with any 3D fighter, or perhaps, just a crap game.

LOL

In any case, there is basically a unanimous approval of games like Soul Calibur & SC 1.5 (2 wasn't much of a sequel). The Soul Edge/Calibur series shows that there is definitely promise in the 3D world and can include amazing, fluid animations that rival that of our pixelated friends of past. A potentially promising title is the new KOF (King of Fighters) Maximum Impact. It is being distributed by Playmore (who acquired SNK) and since they put their seal of approval on it, I'd be quite interested to give it a go.

On the anime front, I'm downloading episode 50 of Full Metal Alchemist as well as the soundtrack for Samurai Champloo, which is a magnificent meld of Japanese and Hip-Hop influences. One of my favorite episodes of SamCham includes a beat-boxing sidekick who follows one of the more lame samurai. He's basically all show and no go. My friends and I always said it'd be fun to have a soundtrack played while you walk down the street (ala John Shaft), so this was a fun moment.

OMFG, Full Metal Alchemist 50 is bombshell after bombshell!!! Holy crap! I cannot wait for the movie! I've uploaded some old pics of my buddies and me...I guess it works. =)

New Anime episodes...

I've checked out some newer anime episodes in the last few days. Heck I've even got to the point where I'm willing to watch raw episodes (ones without subtitles) just to keep up. I got the new FMA 49 that way. Since then, I got the translated version. The really nice thing is that anbudom.net and A-H (anime heaven) both have their episode of Naruto coming out pretty consistently (weekly). Although it seems that anbu always releases later, I'm assuming that their quality is higher - even though I haven't done a direct comparison, so that's just based on heresay, heh. In any case, I end up downloading whichever one is first and enjoy it just the same. I've begun to notice that many of the words used are open to interpretation, since the word used may be boring as a direct translation or doesn't directly translate at all.

In any case, the latest ones I've seen include:
Full Metal Alchemist - 49
Samurai Champloo - 15
Naruto - 102 (and the 2004 Jump Festa/Fiesta/whatever special)
Samurai 7 - 11 and 12

Naruto 101 is really, really DUMB, but they do warn you at the beginning. LOL
I'm assuming that they're going to get to the more interesting stuff in the next 3 or 4 episodes. I could find out by reading ahead in the manga, but what's the fun in that?
The latest Champloo and Sam7 are getting really fun and exciting as well as Full Metal Alchemist. Obviously FMA's tension is ramping up, because supposedly there's only fifty-some episodes and then a big movie. Where Naruto's movie doesn't have anything to do with the Manga or TV show, I think FMA could possibly resolve a big cliffhanger with the movie. Maybe?

Gaming, Past and Present

"You've come a long way baby"...
For me, it started with both PC and Console games.
I had text-only games for my PC (Zenith "portable" with a 8086 Intel processor and 640KB of RAM) like "Adventure" and platformers like "jump man"
For the Atari 2600, I had Joust and "Combat" which supposedly had over 20 modes of play LOL
I also had the obligatory Pac-Man among others. Friends of mine had this new system called the Nintendo. I didn't quite understand how advanced it was compared to my monochrome games. My cousin also had a ColecoVision with Buck Rodgers and Miner 2049er. Did tennis paddles rock or what?
In any case, I was first exposed to the Nintendo with Mario and Zelda, and I guess being a little 8 year old, I didn't really know how to explain to my parents that I wanted it BADLY!!!
Come 5th grade (10 years old) I finally got my thoughts collected & I was able to bargain with my dad to give me one if I got ALL A's in class. Sure enough, I did and got into a bunch of trouble for playing Duck Hunt after I was supposed to be sleeping. It was that damn zapper...too fiendishly loud.
With my Nintendo (as many others did) I got the Mario/DuckHunt pack in a single cart. For my birthday, I was awarded (among other things) $50 cash. The gears were turning...I had seen the movie (a horrible flop, and shameless game plug) The Wizard, with Fred Savage rockin' the NES controller. My fate was sealed, with the $20 from my grandparents, and $30 from my parents...I would buy SUPER MARIO BROTHERS THREE! It was a historic day when I plugged in my cart and played for hours and hours. Some NES failures include the horrible reticle based Zapper that was voice activated. Sure, you looked cool, but you felt silly playing Duck Hunt with a helmet. Also, another terrible peripheral was the NES Power Pad, just like the modern day Dance Dance Revolution pads, it had sensors that you stepped on to make your Track 'n Field guy run and jump. For long jump, you could of course cheat by stepping off the pad. LOL, I guess the Power Pad was amusing after all.
Flash forward to middle school, when I got my first 16-bit console. The Sega Genesis. I was absolutely obsessed with Sega, since one of my neighbors had the Master System and the Genesis. Evil bastard...had Altered Beast and all the cool titles.
I'll continue the epic with 16 to 32 bit consoles in the next episode of CONSOLE LAMER!
Tony.

Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Anime

Somewhat new to the world of Anime, I've been getting pretty deep into a number of series...

First It began with Vampire Hunter D, and then on to Akira, both good for their time period. I then watched all 11 hours of Neon Genesis: Evangelion. To me, this was an awakening to how powerful the format of animation can really be and what kind of emotions it can evoke. "Cartoons", as we Americans so dismissively call them, are not just for kids.

Currently Watching: (episode)
Samurai Champloo - 13
Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu
Samurai Champloo - 12
Naruto - 99 (man, it's hard waiting for the Naruto Movie)
Samurai 7 - 10
Full Metal Alchemist - 46 (yet another series with a movie)
